Finland’s 100th Birthday – Coffee break for the whole University of Oulu students and staff 5th of December at 2pm

University of Oulu together with the Student Union of the University of Oulu organise a blue and white coffee break for all staff and students of the university. The shared coffee moment takes place on December 5th at 2 pm at Restaurant Napa on the Linnanmaa Campus.

The coffee break is part of a nationwide celebration with three deeds: Serve coffee, hoist the flag, illuminate.

All members of University of Oulu community are warmly welcome to the coffee break.

OYY is looking for nominations for receivers of the OYY honorary academic badges

The Student Union of the University of Oulu (OYY) is requesting its member organisations to provide their nominations for receivers of the OYY honorary academic badges. Deadline for the nominations is 21.1.2018.

Form is at the OYY’s Society portal. It is crucial to fill in the fields “Nominated as a badge receiver” and “Nominating organisation and their contact person”.  The receivers of the badge will be informed personally.

The board of OYY will present the badges according to honorary committees suggestion as required in the festive regulations. OYY festive regulations are available at the OYYs website.

Independence Days Torchlight Procession 6.12.

Welcome to Independence Day torchlit procession! Torchlight procession is one of the oldest traditions of The Student Union of The Oulu. All of the OYY members and alumni are welcome to join the procession.

As a special celebrate of The Finland’s 100th Birthday Torchlight procession is joining The Processional of Time which is The Official event of Finland’s 100th Birthday Celebration in Oulu. The Processional of Time is choreographed by Petri Kauppinen, and consists of ten different sections. Join the once in a lifetime procession with The Student Union.

The procession begins from Oulu Market Square (meeting at the Toripolliisi -statue) at 14.30pm. There are 100 torches available so if you wish to have your own, please show up early. We will walk to City Hall with The Processional of Time to see Cassiopeia (and fireworks!). The Processional of Time ends at The City Hall, but the Torchlight procession continues from The City Hall to Intiö cemetery.

After the procession please join us at Bar Vanha Paloasema (address: Kauppurienkatu 24 A) to watch the Independence Day celebrations and the Presidential Ball.

The application period for Doctoral student representatives in Doctoral Students’ Section and UniOGS continued

We are missing applications for some of the positions in the Doctoral Students’ Section and UniOGS. for the year 2018

The following positions are available:

The positions offer an excellent opportunity to participate in University decision-making and the development and quality assurance of doctoral training. The positions demand responsibility, good interaction skills and motivation towards advocating doctoral students’ interests in University decision making. Student representatives also collaborate closely with the Doctoral Students’ Section by, for example, discussing topical issues of the administrative organs of the University in the Section’s meeting. The Doctoral Students’ Section seeks to influence the development of doctoral training and promote equal rights and well-being of doctoral students. The Section meetings are held approximately once in 1-2 months.

The applicant must be a student of UniOGS and enrolled as active for the up-coming semester. Finnish skills are considered an advantage but are not obligatory. The Student Union offers training for the task.  The chair of the Doctoral Students’ Section must be a member of the Student Union in 2018.

Also mention what is your major in your studies and the stage of your doctoral studies.

The applications will be discussed in the meeting of the Doctoral Students’ Section on Dec 8th at 14:15 in Tellus Frost Club. The meetings are open for all doctoral students and applicants are also welcome to join.

Application period for Student Union’s Board continues

As a member of the Board of the Student Union you will have an unique opportunity of developing yourself as a student influencer, making new friends and learning a wide range of working skills. You will get to influence on how the Student Union can be seen among the students and to create an even better Student Union than before. The work for a better student life will begin when you will be elected to the Board of the Student Union for the year 2018.

Working in the Board offers 6-9 students an unique opportunity of leading and developing the Student Union’s daily activities according to the line set by the Student Council. In order to apply for the Board, you do not have to be superhuman. Motivation and eagerness to learn and develop yourself as a part of a year-long work for the better life of students are all you need. As a member of the board you will act as a link between the students and keep in touch with different subjects as an OYY-kummi. You will get to broaden your project management, leadership and organization abilities, improve your social skills and networking, and develop numerous other abilities needed during and after your studies. The year as member of the board will bring along tons of new and exciting friends all over Finland and the opportunity to influence for the benefit of over 11,000 students not only on university level, but on city and nationwide level as well.

Work in the Board of the Student Union is a position of trust, in which the board will for example select the student representatives in multiple different decision-making bodies, arrange events and campaigns, be responsible for the Student Union’s finances, and act as the advocate of the students’ interests. The board members’ tasks vary a lot, which means that you will have a chance of utilizing your special skillset. So please feel free to contact previous board members and ask them about their work in the Board of the Student Union!

Work in the board requires commitment and taking part in weekly activities such as board meetings, project development and political influencing, which all usually take place around office hours. Working in the board is not a full time job, so flexible studies along the work is certainly possible. In order to ensure the livelihood of the board members, all board members receive a monthly paycheck of 500 euros, and the chairperson of the board receives 800 euros a month depending on the board’s size and budget. In 2017, the vice chairperson of board receives and additional payment of 50 euros.

After a year in the board you have received:

  • a large network of contacts and new friends all over Finland
  • confidence and courage to overcome even the most difficult situations
  • unique academic reputation and new perspectives for life
  • experience in a wide range of working skills, such as teamwork, project management and conference skills.

All members of the Student Union are eligible for applying for the Board of the Student Union. The application process has usually been based on the outcome of negotiations between different representative groups, so contact a representative group near you and let them know you are interested in applying for the Board of the Student Union. The earlier the groups know the names of people interested in applying, the earlier they can start the negotiations to get their own applicants through. One or more proposals of the board will be made after the negotiations, and the leading proposal will be accepted during a Student Council meeting on the 5th of December.

Apply for the position of the chairperson of the committee of economic affairs of for the position of the committee member!

The Student Union Committee of Economic Affairs is looking for a chairperson for the year 2018, as well as for three members for the 2018–2019 term of office.

The positions of the chairperson and the members of the committee call for inclination and aptitude to familiarize oneself with the financial affairs of the Student Union. Prior experience in economic affairs will be seen as an advantage. The Student Council will select the chairperson and the three committee members in a meeting on the 5th of December. The statutory responsibilities of the Committee of Economic Affairs include:

1) preparing for the Student Council meeting by:

  1.    selecting the board of auditors for the Student Union;
  2.   confirming the financial statement of the Student Union;
  3. granting freedom from liability to the members of the Executive Board of the Student Union and the Secretary General
  4. taking legal action against the members of the Executive Board, the Secretary General or the auditor for damages; an
  5.  deciding on the organizing of a separate audit;

2) when necessary, providing a statement regarding a council decision prepared by the board and related to the finances of the Student Union or the operations of the Committee for EconomicAffairs;
3) evaluating whether the operational and financial goals set by the council have been met, and whether the operations of the Student Union have been organized in a profitable and appropriate manner;
4) providing the council with an assessment report on every preceding calendar year for the purpose of the auditing proceedings; and
5) attending to other responsibilities set to the committee by the council.

The Committee for Economic Affairs comprises of the chairperson and six other members. The Secretary General serves as the secretary of the committee. Members of the Student Union’s Executive Board or its clerical workers are not eligible for the Committee of Economic Affairs. Similarly excluded from the position are any close relatives of the Executive Board members and clerical workers as specified by the Administrative Procedure Act (434/2003), section 28, paragraphs 2 or 3.

1. APPLY FOR THE POSITION OF THE CHAIRPERSON OF THE SECTION FOR SUPERVISION OF INTERESTS

The purpose of the Section for Supervision of Interests of the Student Union of the University Oulu is to raise awareness among university students concerning present-day issues and interests related to them. In addition, the Section for Supervision of Interests acts as an easily engageable means of attending the operations of the Student Union. The Section for Supervision of Interests organizes events, campaigns, visits, and discussions related to present-day topics and issues. The Section for Supervision of Interests serves the interests of all members of the Student Union.

For the year 2018, the Student Union of the University of Oulu is looking for an inventive, hands-on chairperson who is interested in societal influencing. The Section for Supervision of Interests operates both in Finnish and English. Accordingly, the chairperson is required to have good skills in both written and spoken English. The chairperson’s position is well-suited for a person who is willing to make a difference in the academic community and advance the university students’ awareness of current issues. The task is well-suited for a full-time student.

The purpose of the Section for Environmental Affairs of the Student Union of the University of Oulu is to raise students’ awareness of environmental issues. In addition, the section’s aim is to ensure that environmental issues are taken increasingly into consideration in the policies of the Student Union, the university and the city of Oulu. The section organizes events, campaigns, visits, and discussions related to current environmental topics and issues. The Section for Environmental

Affairs serves the interests of all members of the Student Union.

For the year 2018, the Student Union of the University of Oulu is looking for an inventive, hands-on chairperson who is interested in environmental issues. The chairperson of the section will be able to influence the functionality of the university’s recycling systems. Furthermore, the chairperson has an opportunity to comment on the environmental policies of the city and region of Oulu. The chairperson’s position is excellently suited for a person who is willing to promote environmental values from a student’s point of view. The task is well-suited for a full-time student.

The section is able to comment on the cultural offerings in the city of Oulu. As a supporting body, the Cultural Affairs Section may also participate in carrying out events organized by the Student Union, such as Vulcanalia. The Cultural Affairs Section serves the interests of all members of the Student Union.

The Cultural Affairs Section works in collaboration with the university’s student and social associations as well as various cultural operators of the city of Oulu. For the year 2018, the Student Union of the University of Oulu is looking for a hands-on, inventive, efficient chairperson who is interested in cultural matters. The chairperson’s position is well-suited for a person who is keen on organizing fun and interesting leisure time activities for all students of the University of Oulu.
