Ten-minute oral health procedure appointments become free of charge

Ten-minute oral health procedure appointments will be free of charge for FSHS clients from the start of September. The change is based on a previously agreed follow-up of cumulative fees charged and on feedback received.

A healthcare professional will determine the necessary duration of the oral health appointment after assessing the patient’s need for treatment. The FSHS uses an oral health procedure classification compiled by THL (the National Institute for Welfare and Health), in which appointment durations are determined on the basis of how challenging a procedure is to be performed. Ten-minute appointments are suitable for short check-ups such as the removal of sutures.

Services, free of chargeand and chargeable

Changes to VR student discounts

Announcement from the student organisations: Changes to VR student discounts

On 30 May the state-owned railway company VR and the Finnish student organisations have agreed on contract changes regarding student ticket prices and marketing cooperation. The changes will come into effect on 3 June 2013.

The changes were initiated by VR as a part of the company’s comprehensive train ticket pricing reform, which aims to adjust ticket prices towards a more demand-based pricing system. Beginning on June 3 the student discount percentage for Basic and Extra class tickets will start to vary between 45 to 55 per cent. What this means is that students receive the highest discount for tickets with low demand, while more popular tickets entitle to a lower discount.

VR has convinced the student organisations that the reform will, on average, make travelling by train more affordable for students – even despite the slight increase in the prices of the most popular departures. The student organisations demand an evaluation of the effects of the reforms once they come into force.

Chairpersons of the student organisations state that ”the priority [of the student organisations] in this reform is to secure that students, now and in the future, can make the occasional visit back home without having to spend their whole month’s lunch budget. We assume that VR, being a completely state-owned railway company, shares our goals and we hope to continue our successful relationship with them.”

Finnish universities leading the way in student feedback

Make way for YOPALA!

Exciting news for anyone interested in quality assurance of higher education. A national student feedback survey for universities is being implemented for the first time in Finland in May 2013. The survey will look at students’ satisfaction with their university and studying experience. The survey is aimed at those students who have completed their BA/BSc-degrees or, in the case of medical students, those who have been studying for 3 years.

The Ministry for Education and Culture of Finland is planning that 3% of basic funding allocated to universities will be based on student feedback from 2015 onwards. This entails a total sum of approximately 50 million euros to be divided among the universities based on student feedback. The exact principles for factoring the student feedback system into the funding will be shaped during the first round of the survey, which is taking place in a few weeks.

Including student feedback as an integral part of a university funding model is something quite new and Finland may well be on its way towards blazing a trail of sorts in higher education QA. The Universities Finland UNIFI (formerly The Finnish Council of University Rectors) organisation and the National Union of University Students in Finland have been working on getting the survey up and running for some years now. Preparations are currently being led by Vice-Rector Olli Silvén, Provost for Education at the University of Oulu.

Taking quality aspects like this into account in funding is certainly a step in the right direction. Universities should also be able to acquire first-hand knowledge on how students view the education they are receiving and how the education can be further developed. “When students feel that their voice has real value, it will encourage them to give constructive feedback,” says OYY’s President of the Board Valle Uimonen.

They survey, aka “YOPALA” will be implemented by an internationally renowned higher education research and consultancy agency CHE Consult GmbH. Individual respondents and universities will be able to compare their own answers with other student groups and institutions. YOPALA is partly based on CHE’s Quest-research.

OYY encourages all BA and BSc-graduates from 2012 to respond to the survey, the personalized link to it should be dropping into your emailbox soon. “This is a very important survey. Students really have a significant opportunity to influence the development of education at the University of Oulu”, Uimonen reminds.

The university will be raffling a sauna evening at the Saarelan Rantasauna for ten people (the winner and 9 friends), catered by Uniresta Oy.

International Section aka KV-jaosto meets over Valentine’s Day Pizza on 14.2 at 16-18 @ OYY’s spanking new offices

The I-Section is a division in the student union, and is a forum that allows students to impact and to help OYY make student life in Oulu better. n the I-section meetings, we deal with international issues that are important for students – exchange, international students, and internationalization on campus. Students are also welcome to voice any issues and bring those to the discussion table!

The international section is open to all students and OYY members. Especially international students, international reps in student organisations here at UO and internationally-minded Finnish students often participate, but we welcome all students who are interested in international issues and being active in the student community.

Anyone OYY member can attend all the meetings of the I-section, but you can also become a Member of the Section, where you get the power of vote. The section decides on the amount of members and deputies. They are expected to participate, but get good experience in the meantime – and a nice insert in their CV.

This year we plan to have guests from within the university community and also help the student union improve its services. We also talk about academic and social issues related to internationalization. There are plans to pull a nice little stunt or event to promote student mobility (or maybe something else?)… Come help us brainstorm!

PIZZA SERVED!
Sign-up by joining the event on Facebook or send an email to kv@nulloyy.fi. Specify any dietary requirements. We don’t want to create hassle, but we need to know how much pizza to order. :) Sign-up by 13.2 please!
