The Council
Every second year students elect a Council of Representatives (Edustajisto) which is the highest decision-making organ of OYY. There are 37 representatives in the Council. All the members of Student Union can vote or stand as a candidate in the election. The current Council was elected in the autumn of 2009.
Usually members of the council belong to an electoral group. Groups bring together students from the same field of study or with similar political ideas. Some of them are more or less connected to Finnish political parties.
The Council has meetings when necessary, usually once a month. The responsibilities of the representatives consist mainly of attending these meetings and supervising the actions of the board. Some of the representatives are also members in certain working groups.
The president of the Council is also the president of the Student Union.
The Executive Board
The Council of Representatives, in turn, appoints the Executive Board (Hallitus) to handle administrative and executive issues of the Student Union.
Members of the board are students just like any other and they are NOT employees of the Student Union. However, being in the board is full time work, which means that the board members are usually not able to study much. This is why they receive a compensation for being in this position of trust.
The Board has a President and from five to eight members. The President of the Board for the year 2010 is Mr. Ilari Nisula and the Vice-President is Mr. Kangas. The Board can be reached via email: hallitus@oyy.fi.

Staff
The Council and the Board are assisted by six secretaries (Sihteeristö) who are responsible for the practical matters and daily activities of the Student Union. The secretaries are each responsible for a certain sector of the Student Union. Secretaries are paid employees, although some of them are also studying on the side.
In addition, the Student Union Office employes two office secretaries. Student Union also publishes a student newspaper "Oulun ylioppilaslehti". The editorial staff includes an editor-in-chief, sub-editor and advertisement and sales manager.
