North Pride in July - march with OYY

Student Union OYY invites all its members to march for equal human rights on 24th July 12 am.

On this date Oulun SETA -association organises a second Pride-march in the history of Oulu. Pride has been organised previously in 1997. SETA welcome all sexual and gender minorities and other people from Northern Finland to take part in the event.

Sexual and gender diversity is seen as a gift. They are inherent features and cannot be consciously changed. Pride stands for work done for the equal rights and interests of sexual and gender minorities."

Students have to be able to study and living without discrimination and intolerance in the multicultural University and city of Oulu. The Student Union is committed to promote tolerance among its members.

CIMO: Master's degree programmes selected for possible tuition fees

The Finnish Ministry of Education has selected specific English-language Master's degree programmes for which it will be possible for Finnish higher education institutions to collect tuition fees from non-EU/EEA nationals. Tuition fees may be collected on a trial basis, starting from autumn 2010, 2011 or 2012.
Tuition fees may be charged from non-EU/EEA nationals enrolled in these programmes. Those higher education institutions that choose to collect tuition fees in their English-language Master’s programmes will also provide scholarship options for non-EU/EEA students enrolled in tuition-fee carrying Master’s programmes.
Note that the inclusion of a particular Master’s in the list does not yet necessarily mean that the programme will carry a fee - the institutions providing these Master’s programmes decide independently whether they collect tuition fees in these programmes or not.
Therefore it is recommendable always to check the tuition fee policy for each Master’s programme separately, either from the institution's own web site or from CIMO’s International Study programmes database http://www.studyinfinland.fi/studying/international_study_programmes.html.
Tuition fees will not be collected from students enrolled in degree programmes on Bachelor's or Doctoral level. Also, non-EU citizens permanently resident in Finland will not be subject to tuition fees.

From: CIMO / Higher Education Department

Note: In the University of Oulu, the tuition fee policies will be decided shortly. The Student Union OYY continues to act for tuition-free education for all.

Vappu Programme

Students start to celebrate Vappu well in advance, sometimes even one week before. OYY has listed events of Vappu for you, check out the list and take your pick!

Universitas Oulu –project continues

Through the Universitas project, guilds have a chance to develop and create practices that support learning best from the students’ perspective. The project continues from the year 2009 and has EUR 40 000 to give out to student guilds this year. Money can be used for example for organising seminars, study groups and other activities that support studies.

Statement on the University’s actions on the budgetary deficit

The Student Union gave a statement on 1.4.2010 about the actions that the University of Oulu has taken due its budgetary deficit. OYY states that students need to be kept in mind while the decisions are made. The transition period for students referred to Oulu from the Kajaani Teacher Education unit that will be shut down needs to be sufficient. The University needs to actively look for solutions to offer sufficient language teaching to students while the Language Centre’s resources are redirected. Students need to be able to study a variety of languages, the teaching needs to be academic and of good quality, and free for the student.

Against Racism 18.3.

Student Union's I-section and AIESEC take part in the Finnish Redcross's campaign Againts Racism and organises a chance to throw your prejudices to the trash on Linnanmaa campus, green coat racks, on 18th March 10-13.

Welcome!

Statement on the discussion on tuition fees

The Student Union gave a statement on 5.3.2010 about the discussion on tuition fees. OYY reminds political parties of their promises towards tuition-free education and that the trial period of tuition fees for non-EU/EEA students needs to be clearly assessed before further decisions can be made.

Statement: Staff cuts in the University of Oulu cannot hinder progress in studies

10.2.2010

University of Oulu has begun co-operation negotiations with the staff and estimated cuts are 180 man-years. Despite the great financial challenges faced and the need for cuts, students’ conditions for studying and their possibilities to progress in their studies must be secured. The Student Union of the University of Oulu (OYY) demands that staff cuts are made in a way that does not hinder the basic tasks of the University of Oulu, teaching and research. Cuts need to be productive and can be received for instance through re-organising support services.

The Student Union of the University of Oulu is especially worried about the Language Centre’s situation. Is the talk of a research university of high international level only rhetorical? Language Centre has been in financial difficulties for sometime already, but it would be very short-sighted to make cuts to language teaching in a situation where more and more of the funding for universities is based on the level of their internationalization. Teaching English does not provide students with varied language skills, but they need to be offered academic teaching of good quality in a wide-ranging set of languages. “Language courses inspire students to go on an exchange and give valuable skills that help students to get employed” reminds Ilari Nisula, the president of the board of the Student Union of the University of Oulu.

The situation with Finnish courses offered to international students is also very worrying. If the University wants to retain its international degree students, they need to be offered a chance to adapt to Finland through learning our language.

Organising language teaching is already under a strain due to previous cuts. Lack or insufficiency of teaching resources can not delay students from graduating or diminish their chances of finding employment that corresponds to their degree.

Afternoon Coffee in memory of the so-called "Elf professor"

Student Union’s 50th Anniversary celebrations for the Autumn term culminate in Afternoon Coffee in memory of a so-called “Elf professor” in a cupboard at the Department of Physics, TE305 on Dec 12th, 12 o’clock. All students and staff are welcome to attend.

The “Elf professor”, Aapo Heikkilä (born April 12th 1931 in Haapavesi – died April 22. 1993) entered the University of Oulu very early on after the university was started. He took part particularly in the lectures of physics, chemistry and mathematics, and started to develop his own field of science, ortotopology. He became a popular shadow lecturer who was also approved of by the official university staff. His lectures, which he held a few times a year, always filled even the largest lecture halls. Like private lecturers before him he, too, collected money from his audience to cover the expenses. The Afternoon Coffee will take place in a cupboard which was given to him for office space as he started to give lectures in the field of ortotopology, a pseudoscience he invented.

Heikkilä’s fame as a lecturer of ortotopology spread around and he would travel at least to Helsinki, Kemi, Mikkeli and Tampere to lecture. Also the ortotopology exercise classes he organized, the coffee party on the day of Aapo in December and his birthday party in April were popular events. The active participation of students guaranteed that the unconventional Aapo Heikkilä was chosen the Oulu Citizen of the Year in 1987.

Welcome to celebrate the memory of the “Elf professor” with the Student Union!

Independence Day Student Procession 6.12.

Welcome to celebrate the Finnish Independence Day, 6.12., with the Student Union OYY

The traditional procession is a solemn occasion with students carrying torches. The procession will start at 17:00 from the Student Union office (Mannenkatu 1), will pause at the City Hall to listen to the Cassiopeia Choir and continue to the Intiö Cemetery to lay a garland to the graves of the soldiers who have died defending Finland.

The evening will continue with a more celebratory mood back at Rauhala (Mannenkatu 1) with music, Finnish mulled wine “glögi” and gingerbread.

All students are welcome to take part in the procession and the following celebrations. If you do, wear dark (and warm!) clothes, be prepared to carry a torch and do not take photos while you are walking in the procession.

Ville Impiö from Oulu was selected to the board of SYL
