The Student Union of the University of Oulu is seeking active and motivated student representatives, more commonly known as hallopeds, for for the Faculty Boards, the Faculty Management Groups, and the Faculty Education Committees.

Hallopeds, student representatives in administration, are representatives elected for administrative organs from among the members by the Student Union Representative Council or the Board. In their position, they represent themselves and the whole student community. Student representatives are full members of administration. All students can apply for the position of a halloped through the open call for applications.

Hallopeds and the Student Union Board together aim at preserving and improving students’ services and equity in the community. All students are encouraged to provide them with feedback to guide their influencing work.

The application call for student representative positions is open till 30th of September 2019. The term for the position starts immediately after the election for the position and ends 31st of December, 2019.

The Faculty Boards

Are you interested in strategic leadership or on how the finances of your faculty are guided and attended to? Do you see room for improvement in the personnel policy or the communication of your faculty? The Faculty Board is a great place to influence these matters!

The Faculty Board supports the faculty leaders by carrying out and attending to its policy program, preparing and attending to its finance, operations and staffing plans, and communicating with the faculty staff and their students.

Note that the language of the meetings, depending on faculty, is mainly Finnish.

Your application should include, at the least, the following information: your major subject and the state of your studies, your own objectives for working in the Faculty Board, your motivations and what, according to you, are the most important tasks of the student representatives. In order to be eligible for applying for the Faculty Board, you must have the primary study right in the faculty in question. When appointing the student representatives, the Faculty Boards aim to have equal representation from as many departments as possible.

Faculty Board for Faculty of Biochemistry and Molecular Medicine: no members, one deputy
The Faculty Board for Faculty of Education: no members, two deputies
Faculty Board for Faculty of Information Technology and Electrical Engineering: no members, one deputy
Faculty Board for Faculty of Technology: no members, one deputy

The Managment groups of the faculties

The management group of your faculty is an ideal place for getting to know and taking part in the development and strategic leadership of your own faculty. As a student representative in the faculty management group, you will act as a specialist of the students’ views and get to work with not only the administrators of the faculty, but with the leaders of the research groups as well. The management groups are responsible for supporting the dean in leading and developing the faculty and carrying out its strategies.

Note that the language of the meetings, depending on faculty, is Finnish.

Your application should include, at the least, the following information: your major subject and the state of your studies, your own objectives for working in the faculty management group, your motivations and what, according to you, are the most important tasks of the student representatives. In order to be eligible for applying for the faculty management team, you must have the primary study right in the faculty in question.

The Faculty Education Committees

At least two student representatives are appointed to each Education Committee, so no one hast to be left to attend their matters alone. The tasks of the Faculty Education Committees include the guidance and assessment of education leading to a degree, and the collection and processing of student feedback. Due to the aforementioned task, the Education Committees play a big role in ensuring the effectiveness of student feedback.

Education Committee for faculty of Technology: one member, one deputy
Education Committee of Oulu Business School: no members, one deputy

Doctoral Training Committee of Technology and Natural Sciences

The position offers an excellent opportunity to participate in University decision-making and the development and quality assurance of doctoral training. The position demands responsibility, good interaction skills and motivation towards advocating doctoral students’ interests in University decision making. Student representatives also collaborate closely with the Doctoral Students’ Section by, for example, discussing topical issues of the administrative organs of the University in the Section’s meeting. The Doctoral Students’ Section seeks to influence the development of doctoral training and promote equal rights and well-being of doctoral students. The Section meetings are held approximately once in 1-2 months.

The applicant must be a student of UniOGS and enrolled as active for the up-coming semester. Finnish skills are considered an advantage but are not obligatory. The Student Union offers training for the task.

In your application, please explain in your own words what is the role of the Doctoral Students’ Section at the University of Oulu, why you should be selected for the position and what you would especially like to develop in doctoral training, the position of doctoral students and the activities of the Doctoral Students’ Section. Also mention what is your major in your studies and the stage of your doctoral studies.

The applications will be discussed in the meeting of the Doctoral Students’ Section on October, which makes the recommendations to the OYY board.
