The Student Union of the University of Oulu is seeking active and motivated student representatives, more commonly known as hallopeds, for the University Collegium, for the Faculty Management Groups, the Faculty Boards, and the Faculty Education Committees.

Hallopeds, student representatives in administration, are representatives elected for administrative organs from among the members by the Student Union Representative Council or the Board. In their position, they represent themselves and the whole student community. Student representatives are full members of administration. All students can apply for the position of a halloped through the open call for applications.

Hallopeds and the Student Union Board together aim at preserving and improving students’ services and equity in the community. All students are encouraged to provide them with feedback to guide their influencing work.

The application call for student representative positions is open till 31st of August 2019. The term for the position starts immediately after the election for the position and ends 31st of December, 2019. Exceptions are: “The student wellbeing working group of the University of Oulu” and “Equality and diversity working group of Kontinkangas campus” which application period is open for the time being and which term ends 31st of December, 2021.

The University Collegium

All members of the Student Union who have registered for attendance are eligible to apply for the student representative seats in the University Collegium. The tasks of the University Collegium are, for example, to select the members not part of the University Board, and to approve the University’s financial statement and annual report. As a member of the University Collegium you will be able to witness how the University functions as a whole. The student representatives have also been able to greatly improve their recruitment skills when seeking and interviewing the members not part of the University Board. The Collegium meets about 2 to 3 times a year. The language of the meetings is Finnish.

The Student Council will elect the student representatives for the University Collegium.

Your application should include, at the least, the following information: your major subject and the state of your studies, previous experiences as a student representative in the administration, and your motivation for working in the University Collegium.

Available positions: one member, one deputy

Education council

The Education Council supports the University Board of Directors and the rector in advancing education, provides initiatives regarding education policy as well as initiatives for developing teaching, and evaluates the quality of University education. The Education Council also observes the progress of education strategy projects and discusses the need to develop teaching and how the strategic money should be targeted.

Courage, desire to influence, and the readiness to familiarize yourself with current educational policy trends is required of all student representatives. The Board of the Student Union will select the candidates presented to the rector. The more precise timing of the interviews will be announced to those invited to an interview in the near future. Education Council works almost fully in English, so these positions very suitable for international students as well.

Your application should include, at the least, the following information: your major subject and the state of your studies, possible previous experiences on taking part in education development, and the most important themes you want to bring forward in the Education Council.

The Faculty Boards

Are you interested in strategic leadership or on how the finances of your faculty are guided and attended to? Do you see room for improvement in the personnel policy or the communication of your faculty? The Faculty Board is a great place to influence these matters!

The Faculty Board supports the faculty leaders by carrying out and attending to its policy program, preparing and attending to its finance, operations and staffing plans, and communicating with the faculty staff and their students.

Note that the language of the meetings, depending on faculty, is mainly Finnish.

Your application should include, at the least, the following information: your major subject and the state of your studies, your own objectives for working in the Faculty Board, your motivations and what, according to you, are the most important tasks of the student representatives. In order to be eligible for applying for the Faculty Board, you must have the primary study right in the faculty in question. When appointing the student representatives, the Faculty Boards aim to have equal representation from as many departments as possible.

Available positions:
Faculty Board for Faculty of Biochemistry and Molecular Medicine: no members, one deputy
Faculty Board for Faculty of Science: no members, on deputy
Faculty Board for Faculty of Technology: no members, two deputy

The Faculty Education Committees

At least two student representatives are appointed to each Education Committee, so no one hast to be left to attend their matters alone. The tasks of the Faculty Education Committees include the guidance and assessment of education leading to a degree, and the collection and processing of student feedback. Due to the aforementioned task, the Education Committees play a big role in ensuring the effectiveness of student feedback.

The Managment groups of the faculties

The management group of your faculty is an ideal place for getting to know and taking part in the development and strategic leadership of your own faculty. As a student representative in the faculty management group, you will act as a specialist of the students’ views and get to work with not only the administrators of the faculty, but with the leaders of the research groups as well. The management groups are responsible for supporting the dean in leading and developing the faculty and carrying out its strategies.

Note that the language of the meetings, depending on faculty, is Finnish.

Your application should include, at the least, the following information: your major subject and the state of your studies, your own objectives for working in the faculty management group, your motivations and what, according to you, are the most important tasks of the student representatives. In order to be eligible for applying for the faculty management team, you must have the primary study right in the faculty in question.

The Management Group of Oulu Business School (one member, one deputy)

Doctoral Training Committee of Technology and Natural Sciences

The position offers an excellent opportunity to participate in University decision-making and the development and quality assurance of doctoral training. The position demands responsibility, good interaction skills and motivation towards advocating doctoral students’ interests in University decision making. Student representatives also collaborate closely with the Doctoral Students’ Section by, for example, discussing topical issues of the administrative organs of the University in the Section’s meeting. The Doctoral Students’ Section seeks to influence the development of doctoral training and promote equal rights and well-being of doctoral students. The Section meetings are held approximately once in 1-2 months.

The applicant must be a student of UniOGS and enrolled as active for the up-coming semester. Finnish skills are considered an advantage but are not obligatory. The Student Union offers training for the task.

In your application, please explain in your own words what is the role of the Doctoral Students’ Section at the University of Oulu, why you should be selected for the position and what you would especially like to develop in doctoral training, the position of doctoral students and the activities of the Doctoral Students’ Section. Also mention what is your major in your studies and the stage of your doctoral studies.

The applications will be discussed in the meeting of the Doctoral Students’ Section on September, which makes the recommendations to the OYY board.

Equality and diversity working group of Kontinkangas campus

Are matters of equality close to your heart? Do you think equality of the University of Oulu needs improving?

OYY is looking for students to join the equality and diversity working groups for the term starting January 1st, 2019, ending December 12th, 2021. We are looking for 1 member to join the equality and diversity working group of Kontinkangas campus.

The Equality and Diversity working groups 1) act as a cooperation forum that collects and conveys information and expertise on issues related to equality and diversity at the faculty level; 2) organise training, communication, and events for the university community in order to promote equality and diversity in the University; 3) prepare the Faculties’ operating Equality and Diversity Plan; 4) survey, monitor, and promote the topicality and up-to-dateness of the Equality and Diversity Plan as well as the implement the procedures recorded in the plan; and 5) make sure that the University management is informed about their operation and gives annual reports.

Student representatives act as contact persons students can contact regarding equality matters. Make sure you include in your application why you are interested in the position and how you would improve equality in the university community. Mention also the degree programme you study in and the stage you’re in in your studies.

The student wellbeing working group of the University of Oulu

Are the student wellbeing and the ability to study close to your heart? Do you have ideas how to enhance the student wellbeing?

The student wellbeing working group of the University of Oulu enhances the the wellbeing of the students, supports the ability to study and pays and promotes of minding the students’ opinions.

The working group handles various thing from the livelihood to the study counselling and to the progress of the studies. The working group is a bond and a coordinator between different agents working in the student wellbeing field. In the multiprofessional gropu there are agents from FSHS, from the University of Oulu, from the church and from the Studen Union.

The student wellbeing working group meets once a month (not during summer months) on Mondays from 2:15pm-4:00pm.

Tell us in your application why you are applying for the position. Remember to tell your filed of study and hoe your studies are progressing. We hope that applicants are active and indent in their position as a student representative. You can apply to the working group even tough you know that you can not hold the position till the end of term.
