Call for applications

The Student Union of the University of Oulu is seeking active and motivated student representatives, more commonly known as hallopeds, for the University Collegium, the Education Council, the Education Management Group, the Board of Examiners, the Teacher Training Management Group, the Teaching Development Group of the Oulu Extension School, and for the Faculty Management Groups, the Faculty Boards, and the Faculty Education Committees. In addition, the Student Union is seeking student representatives for positions related to students’ wellbeing.

The terms for all positions start on January 1, 2020 and end on December 31, 2021. 

The exception is the FSHS Health Working Group, whose term is from January 1, 2020 to December 31, 2020. 

The application period for these positions ends on November 14, 2019.

The University Collegium

Every member of the Student Union who has registered as an attending student is eligible to apply for student representative in the University Collegium. The tasks of the University Collegium are, for example, to select the external members of the University Board, and to approve the University’s financial statements and annual report. As a member of the University Collegium, you will be able to witness how the University functions as a whole. The student representatives have also been able to greatly improve their recruitment skills when seeking and interviewing the external members of the University Board. The Collegium meets about 2 to 3 times a year. The meetings are held in Finnish.

The Student Council will elect the student representatives for the University Collegium in their meeting on November 21, 2019.

Your application should include at least the following information: your major subject and the state of your studies, previous experiences as a student representative in the administration, and your motivation for working in the University Collegium.

Available positions: 7 members and 7 deputy members

The Education Council

The Education Council supports the rectorate in advancing education, provides initiatives regarding education policy as well as initiatives for developing teaching, and evaluates the quality of education. The Education Council also plays a central role in developing teaching and assessing the quality of education. Among other things, the Education Council observes the progress of education strategy projects and discusses the need to develop teaching and how the strategic money should be targeted.

Courage, desire to influence, and the readiness to familiarize yourself with current educational policy trends are required of all student representatives. The Student Union’s Executive Board will select the candidates presented to the rector. The candidates will be interviewed at the Student Union’s office during week 47. The exact time of the interviews will be announced to those invited to an interview in the near future. Education Council works almost fully in English, so these positions are suitable for international students as well.

Your application should include least the following information: your major subject and the state of your studies, possible previous experiences on taking part in education development, and the most important themes you want to bring forward in the Education Council.

The Research Council

Are you interested in the research conducted in the University of Oulu, questions concerning science policy, and developing scientific research? If the answer is yes, you might be the perfect person for the student representative position in the Research Council.

The Research Council supports the University Board of Directors, the Research Management Group, and the rector in advancing scientific research at the university. The Council also makes proposals about policies of research and evaluates the quality of research on university level. The Council discusses, for example, new scientific directions, doctoral training, recruitment, ethical principles of research, and quality assurance of research. The meetings are held in Finnish.

The Education Management Group

The task of the Education Management Group is to support the Vice Rector for Education and the Education Deans in the management and development of education and the implementation of the education strategy.

The Vice Rector for Education appoints the Education Management Group that consists of the Education Deans, the Vice Dean of Graduate School, and of other members appointed by the Vice Rector for Education. The Vice Rector for Education appoints at least one student member, whose term is two calendar years at a time.

The Education Management Group widely discusses the educational objectives of the university and education development. The Education Management Group is a straight link to the faculties’ education committees. The Student Union’s Executive Board will select the candidates presented to the Vice Rector for Education. The candidates will be interviewed at the Student Union’s office during week 47. The more exact time of the interviews will be announced to those invited to an interview in the near future. Meetings are held in Finnish.

Board of Examiners

Do you advocate students’ rights, are you fair and do you possess strong argumentation skills? Or do you perhaps want to improve the aforementioned qualities? If that is the case, the Board of Examiners is the right place for you! The Board of Examiners deals with the requests of rectification concerning student admission, study credits, and the accreditation of studies taken elsewhere. The Board of Examiners meets when needed, usually once a month.

A seat in the Board of Examiners is one of the most prestigious and the most important ways of influencing in the university. At least the following information must be listed in your application: your major subject and the state of your studies, previous experiences as a student representative in the administration, and your motivation for working in the Board of Examiners. Meetings are held in Finnish.

 The Teacher Training Management Group

Are you studying to become a subject teacher or a class teacher? Is developing teacher training of all subjects close to your heart? In that case, the Teacher Training Management Group is the place for you.

The task of the Teacher Training Management Group is to coordinate the implementation and development of teacher training in different units of the university. When making decisions concerning teacher training that affect all faculties, the faculties and their education committees must consult the Teacher Training Management Group.

Your application should include at least the following information: your major subject and the state of your studies, previous experiences as a student representative in the administration, and your motivation for developing teacher training. Meetings are held in Finnish.

 The Teaching Development Group of the Oulu Extension School

Are you interested in developing language and communication training? Do you have good or less good experiences of language and communication studies? This is the best place to influence the development and functionality of language and communication studies in our university!

The Oulu Extension School (TOPIK) is responsible for organizing language and communication training to the degree students in the university. It also carries out adult education as vocational supplementary training. The unit coordinates the alumni programs at the university. Additionally, the unit supports the faculties and departments by providing skills needed in working life. As a part of the university, the Extension School promotes the achievement of the University’s core tasks, strategy and efficiency.

In the Oulu Extension School, the skills of teaching language and communication skills and developing them is combined with the skills of adult education and project management.

As a student representative in the Teaching Development Group you get to be involved in many things concerning language and communication training, such as the feedback system, course changes, and matters concerning adult education and supplementary education from the perspective of quality and functionality.

The meetings are held in Finnish.

Your application should include at least the following information: your major subject and the state of your studies, previous experiences as a student representative in the administration, and your motivation for developing language and communication education.

 Faculty Management Groups

The management group of your faculty is an ideal place for you to get to know and take part in the development and strategic leadership of your own faculty. As a student representative in the faculty management group, you will act as a specialist on students’ views and get to work with not only the administrators of the faculty, but with the leaders of the research groups as well. The management groups are responsible for supporting the Dean in leading and developing the faculty and carrying out its strategies.

The meetings are mostly held in Finnish, but the language depends on the faculty.

Your application should include at least the following information: your major subject and the state of your studies, your own objectives for working in the faculty management group, your motivations and what, according to you, are the most important tasks of the student representatives. In order to be eligible for applying for the faculty management team, you must have the primary study right in the faculty in question.

Faculty of Humanities: 1 member and 1 deputy member

 The Faculty Boards

Are you interested in strategic leadership or on how the finances of your faculty are guided and attended to? Do you see room for improvement in the personnel policy or the communication of your faculty? The Faculty Board is a great place to influence these matters!

The Faculty Board supports the faculty leaders by carrying out and attending to its policy program, preparing and attending to its finance, operations and staffing plans, and communicating with the faculty staff and their students.

The meetings are mostly held in Finnish, but the language depends on the faculty.

Your application should include at least the following information: your major subject and the state of your studies, your own objectives for working in the Faculty Board, your motivations and what, according to you, are the most important tasks of the student representatives. In order to be eligible for applying for the Faculty Board, you must have the primary study right in the faculty in question. When appointing the student representatives, the Faculty Boards aim to have equal representation from as many departments as possible.

 The Faculty Education Committees

At least two student representatives are appointed to each Education Committee, so no one is left alone with this position of trust. The tasks of the Faculty Education Committees include the guidance and assessment of education leading to a degree, and the collection and processing of student feedback. Due to the aforementioned task, the Education Committees play a big role in ensuring the effectiveness of student feedback.

The meetings are mostly held in Finnish, but the language depends on the faculty.

 FSHS Health Working Group

FSHS’s local Health Working Group coordinates and implements health promotion actions. It is a collaboration group between the health centre, Student Union, University, and other interest groups. 

The Working Group plans, coordinates, and implements health promotion actions, keeps actively in touch with different actors, takes care of health consciousness locally, and trains FSHS’s staff for health promotion by increasing staff’s knowledge on student life and university life. As a concrete example the Health Working Group organises a wellbeing week for the university community every autumn. 

The Student Union’s Executive Board selects the student representatives for FSHS’s Health Working Group.

The Board of Directors of FSHS Unit in Oulu

The tasks of the Board of Directors are to monitor the Health Service Unit and changes in the operational environment, health promotion and community health actions. It also actively collaborates with the foundation’s interest groups. In the Board of Directors, there are representatives from the student unions, foundation’s staff, universities, and public health care.

The Board discusses about the queue situation in the health service unit as well as the implementation of the action plan and budget, actions of the foundation’s executive board, and other topical things in their operational environment. If necessary, the Board can intervene in things that come up in their monitoring.

The Student Union’s Executive Board selects the student representatives for FSHS’s Board of Directors of the Health Service Unit in Oulu.

The Ethics Working Group of University of Oulu

Tasks of the Ethics Working Group are (Decree of the Board of the University of Oulu, December 17, 1997) 1. To stimulate and continue the debate on the University’s values ​​and ethical issues. 2. Consider ways to make all values ​​visible in university work: in research, teaching, studying and administration, and in their exploitation. 3. Participate in discussions on the organization of ethics teaching at the various faculties of the University. 4. Support faculties in establishing ethics committees and in their subsequent work. 5. Organizing ethics-related meetings and events at the university and participating in similar projects at national and international level.

Between September 1, 2018 and August 31, 2021, special duties include:

Promotion of ethical and research ethical education and training at the University of Oulu and ethical issues related to open science and research.

The Student Union’s Executive Board selects the student representatives for the Ethics Working Group.

Students’ Well-being Working Group

The tasks of the Students’ Well-being Working Group are to promote students’ well-being and study ability as well as to take students into account as members of the university community. The Working Group discusses broadly about things related to students’ well-being and study abilities, such as livelihood, living, and communality as well as study guidance and fluency of the studies. In addition, the Working Group’s role includes to work as a bond and coordinator for different bodies that support students’ well-being. In this multi-professional group are representatives from the student union, different actors of the university, FSHS, and Oulu Parish Union.s

The Student Union’s Executive Board selects the student representatives for the Students’ Well-being Working Group.
