Traditional Torchlight Procession is organized once again on Finland’s Independence Day. We’d love to see all OYY’s members and alumni celebrating the Finnish independence with us! The procession is one of the longest surviving academic traditions.
The procession will start at Oulu Market Square, travel past the City Hall steps where we will hear a performance from the OYY’s mixed choir Cassiopeia, and finish at the Intiö cemetery.
We will gather at the Toripoliisi statue at 5pm. Before we start walking, we will be giving out torches and practicing the songs that will be sung during the procession. There are only 100 troches so if you want to carry one, be there early. From the Market Square, we will walk to the City Hall, where we will listen to Cassiopeia. When their performance ends, we will proceed to the Intiö cemetery to lay a wreath on the soldiers’ graves. After the procession is done, the torches must be returned to the organisers. The dress code for the event is student’s cap and, of possible, dark outdoor clothing.
