The traditional Torchlight Procession will not be arranged on the independence day of 2020 – OYY celebrates the Finnish independence on social media

The annually arranged students’ torchlight procession by the Student Union will not be arranged in 2020. The Executive Board of OYY made a decision about the cancellation in their meeting on November 11, 2020. The event will not be arranged due to the safety risks resulting from the covid-19 pandemic.

The students’ torchlight procession is a long-standing academic tradition. In the torchlight procession the members and alumni of the Student Union of the University of Oulu walk through the city centre of Oulu while holding torches in their hands, and go to the cemetery of Intiö to lay down a wreath of spruce to the veteran hero memorial. Traditionally the event has included the performance of the Student Union’s mixed choir Cassiopeia on the steps of the City Hall. The idea of the event is to bring forward students’ respect towards veterans and to celebrate an independent Finland among students. Even though the event is cancelled for 2020, we want to uphold the tradition.

“Regardless of the cancellation of the event, the Student Union of the University of Oulu wants to honour an independent Finland and the people who built it. For that reason we will lay down a wreath at the hero memorial with a small group of student union actives, and we will share the festive atmosphere to our members and all residents of Oulu through social media. We encourage every student to find their own way of celebrating and honouring the important themes of independence day.” says Eetu Leinonen, the Chair of the OYY Board.

The Student Union of the University of Oulu will post a tribute to veterans conveying the atmosphere of the torchlight procession in its social media platforms on independence day December 6.
