Vulcanalia and Preludi to join and become the universities’ collective opening event of the academic year – the goal is to have Finland’s biggest one

The opening event of the academic year for students at the University of Oulu and Oulu University of Applied Sciences will gather the university community of Oulu to Kuusisaari event park on the 10th of September 2021.

Prior to the event, there have been two separate opening events for university students in Oulu. The Student Union of the University of Oulu (OYY) has organised the University of Oulu’s opening event of the academic year, Vulcanalia, which in its last years had an attendance of nearly 4 000 people. The Student Union of Oulu University of Applied Sciences  OSAKO has traditionally organised the Oulu University of Applied Sciences’ opening event of the academic year, Preludi, which has had an attendance of up to 2 500 people. OYY and OSAKO’s collective opening event’s estimated attendance is over 6 000 people.

“Together with the Student Union of OSAKO we want to bring the students of our university community together by organising an event that is even bigger and better in quality than before” OYY’s Chair of the Board Olli Joki comments on the joining together of the two opening events.

The University and the University of Applied Sciences have become closer in recent years as the University of Applied Sciences has relocated some of its functions to Linnanmaa campus. Some of the university services are already collective for all the university students. Now there is a strive to bring the student communities together even more than before. The purpose of the event is to further advance the students’ communality and to highlight Oulu’s student culture.

“OYY and OSAKO’s collective opening event of the academic year has been in the plans already since 2019, so it’s great that the event is finally coming true. Student culture is a major part of Oulu’s culture, and it’s time to make it even more visible. Both are visible in the event in many different ways, and additionally our event’s other values are communality and eco-friendliness” OSAKO’s Chairperson Sami Luukela comments.

The event consists of a student organisation fair at Linnanmaa campus and the evening party at Kuusisaari. At Linnanmaa, students get to learn about the organisations operating within the universities, as well as the event’s partners. The day will end with the big outdoor event at Kuusisaari event park, where students get to celebrate by attending concerts by students and some of Finland’s best artists. The title and a more detailed programme of the event will be published at a later date.

“The event has a great potential to grow and develop to a bigger one, and even become a multi-day event –  Finland’s biggest opening event of the academic year for university students” comments OYY’s Event Producer Kati Kantonen.

The Student Union of the University of Oulu (OYY) and the Student Union of Oulu University of Applied Sciences OSAKO are organising the event together. The Student Union of the University of Oulu is a self-governing public corporation for about 12 000 students. The Student Union of Oulu University of Applied Sciences OSAKO is the common service and support organization for the students of Oulu University of Applied Sciences. OSAKO is one of the biggest student unions in universities of applied sciences in Finland, having over 4 500 members.
