VULCANALIA AND PRELUDI COME TOGETHER – THE UNIVERSITIES’ OPENING EVENT HURMOS

The opening event for students at the University of Oulu and Oulu University of Applied Sciences will celebrate the new academic year on the 10th of September 2021.

The Student Union of the University of Oulu (OYY) and the Student Union of Oulu University of Applied Sciences  OSAKO are joining their prior opening events. Now the opening event of the new academic year will be organised together for the whole academic community. The name of the new opening event of the academic year is called Hurmos.

“The organisers did not want to combine the names of the old events when designing the name for the new event. The idea was to create something completely new. The purpose of the event is to promote the communality of university students and to highlight the diversity of student culture.” comments Kati Kantonen, OYY’s event producer.

On their own, the individual opening events gathered thousands of celebrants each year. In its last years Vulcanalia had an attendance of nearly 4 000 people and Preludi has had an attendance of up to 2 500 people. OYY and OSAKO’s collective opening event’s targeted attendance is over 6 000 people.

“We are consciously limiting the number of participants to well below the half of the maximum capacity in Kuusisaari so the event can be organised safely. The first year shows how we should develop and grow the event.” Kantonen comments.

Hurmos highlights student culture and its diversity throughout the day. In the day event Linnanmaa main corridor is full of students as participants get to know the organisations and societies of the universities and the companies operating in Oulu. The day event is free of charge for participants. The day culminates in a large student festival in Kuusisaari, where participants can enjoy a wide range of activities, food, drinks and performances by both students and main artists. The evening event is restricted for people over the age of 18. Tickets will be on sale starting on August 23, 2021

The Student Union of the University of Oulu (OYY) and the Student Union of Oulu University of Applied Sciences OSAKO are organising the event together. The Student Union of the University of Oulu is a self-governing public corporation for about 12 000 students. The Student Union of Oulu University of Applied Sciences OSAKO is the common service and support organization for the students of Oulu University of Applied Sciences. OSAKO is one of the biggest student unions in universities of applied sciences in Finland, having over 4 500 members.
