STATEMENT: Strengthening Anti-Racism Measures is More Important Than Ever

The Student Union of the University of Oulu (OYY) condemns all forms of violence and wishes to extend its support for the student who was a victim of the stabbing, as well as the entire international community affected by this act. We are concerned about the violent crimes taking place in Oulu and the subsequent air of insecurity they create for all residents, especially the international community and people with immigrant backgrounds.

We are pleased that the city of Oulu responded quickly by organizing an open dialogue for those affected by this matter. It is essential to continue the anti-racism efforts that have been underway and hope that those efforts will be sustained long term. Everyone deserves the right to feel safe and live without fear, whether they are new to Oulu or lived their entire lives here. The university has a large international student body and staff and they are a vital part of our community.

We have discussed the situation with the university and are working together to support our international community.

If you experience racism at the university or are treated in any disrespectful way, you can report and receive support in handling the matter. More information on reporting inappropriate treatment and harassment can be found on the university’s website.

If you encounter racism elsewhere, we encourage you to contact the City of Oulu’s Anti-Racism Support Centre. The Centre offers low-threshold services and allows you to seek help anonymously.

More information about the university’s anti-racism measures can be found on the university’s website.  We wish to encourage reporting of any instances of racism and harassment, and we also urge everyone to intervene in situations where racist or discriminatory behaviours occur.
