Principles of safer space

The Student Union of the University of Oulu’s principles of safer space are followed in all of OYY’s events and spaces. The principles of safer space have been implemented in order to make participants feel safe and take initiative on preventing and intervening in unpleasant situations. The use of the word “safer” instead of “safe” is a choice that recognises that, despite it being the goal, a fully safe space for all cannot be guaranteed.

Principles of safer space

The principles of safer space are based on good conduct and general manners, but also on obligations and rights fixed by law regarding an individual’s equality and immunity. All OYY members have the right to participate in Student Union activities without being subjected to inappropriate treatment. The principles of safer space are updated together with the equality and diversity plan.

Be open
Be open to new things and people. Be unprejudiced and consider new things and situations as opportunities to evolve and learn new things.

Respect others
Give space to others and listen to them. Consider your choices of words. Take the participants’ diversity into account. Don’t make value judgements based on anyone’s knowledge, outer appearance or other characteristics.

Don’t assume
Aim to recognise your own prejudices and avoid making assumptions about anyone’s gender, sexual orientation, health, disability or origin. Don’t act on your assumptions. Respect everyone’s right to self-definition.

Intervene in inappropriate conduct
Intervening in inappropriate conduct is important and not solely the responsibility of the target. You may express it if another person’s conduct towards you or another person feels uncomfortable to you. You can always contact OYY’s harassment contact person. Intervention also means changing one’s own behavior if it’s found to be disturbing.

Allow mistakes
Everyone fails sometimes. It’s human to make mistakes. Questions are allowed.

Include
Make sure that everyone can participate in an activity or discussion. Use language that the participants can understand. Elaborate on terminology and difficult concepts.
