Five new societies joined the OYY community during spring 2026!
By exploring both new societies and those that have been with OYY for years, you can find your own community for both studies and free time!
In addition to subject societies and umbrella guilds, a wide variety of interest societies also operate within OYY. Some have a long history, while others have only just recently been established. This spring, a record number of new interest societies joined the OYY community!
Sointu ry was founded to promote music culture among students at the University of Oulu. The society plans to organize concerts featuring primarily University of Oulu students and alumni. Other long-standing music-focused societies operating within OYY include TeeKu, Cassiopeia and Teekkaritorvet.
Oulun Demariopiskelijat has restarted their activities and rejoined the OYY community after a short break. OYY also hosts several other political student societies, including societies for students interested in green politics, left-wing politics, the National Coalition Party and the Centre Party.
HTTPS ry aims to promote and support Teekkari traditions. The society also wishes to develop and maintain a healthy Teekkari culture among students.
Lipaston suunnistajat brings together students in Oulu higher education institutions who are interested in orienteering. The society aims to raise interest in orienteering and maintain a culture of endurance sports and outdoor activities. OYY already has a long list of sports-focused societies, and an orienteering society is a great addition to the community!
Oulun yliopiston pohjoinen osakunta connects students originating from the regions of Northern Ostrobothnia and Kainuu. The student nation aims to promote regional identity and cultural awareness among higher education students. Other student nations also bring together students from other regions of Finland.
Societies whose activities are aimed at the students of the University of Oulu and whose rules and objectives are not in conflict with OYY’s values may apply to join the OYY community. Societies can also apply for society grants from OYY to support their activities. Political party organizations are an exception to this as they are not eligible for grants.
Societies may also be open to people outside the University of Oulu student body, and many societies also include members and activities equally from the university of applied sciences as well. Interest societies therefore offer great opportunities to network and make friends across the entire higher education student community in Oulu!
