OYY's Board submitted a statement on the top candidates for the Rector's election to the University's Board of Directors

The University of Oulu will elect a new Rector this autumn, and the new Rector’s term will start at the beginning of 2025. The selection will be made by the University’s Board of Directors and is expected to take place during October. 

OYY has been actively involved in the selection process. For example, in early summer we made a statement on the characteristics we would like to see from the Rector. We have also had the opportunity to interview the three front-runners, and to learn about their views, particularly on education and students. The University’s Board has also asked the Student Union for its opinion on the candidates. On the basis of the live webcast for the university community, interviews and the candidates’ applications, we have prepared a statement which was submitted to the University Board for consideration.

In our assessment, we appreciate valuation of education, encouragement of dialogue within the university community and strong vision of the importance of internationalism in the academic environment. Among the tasks and objectives set out in the call for applications, we have assessed the promotion of high quality education and social impact, ensuring financial and economic balance, promoting cooperation and good governance within the university community, and promoting the vitality and regional development of northern Finland.

The statement has now been submitted to the University’s Board of Directors and no further comments on its content will be made at this stage. ”For our part, we now give the University’s Board of Directors the necessary time to make an important decision. However, we are available if they still wish to discuss the matter further”, says Anton Kostiainen, Chair of the OYY Board.
