Suvi-Anna Salminen elected as the Chair of the Board for OYY!

The Student Council elected Suvi-Anna Salminen as the Chair of the Board for the year 2023 in their meeting on 15th of November. The election was unanimous.

“I am very grateful for the trust given by the Student Council. I believe that with my experience, I can bring continuity and perspectives on organisational development to the Student Union” said Salminen.

24-years-old Salminen is a fourth year student of Finnish language. During this year, Salminen has acted as the second vice Chair of the Board and been responsible for the communications. She has previous experience in the society of Finnish language students Suma ry. Besides the Finnish language studies, she has studied sociology and communications.

The year 2023 in the Student Union is heavily influenced by elections. In the spring there are the parliament elections, where it is important to influence the candidates and political parties about students’ needs. In the autumn we have the Student Union’s own Student Council elections, where the Council members and vice members are elected to the next two-year term. In addition, the hallopeds or student representatives of the administration need to be appointed to over one hundred positions across the University administration.

Salminen says that she is eager to work to advance the election advocacy next year. “The advocacy doesn’t end on election day, instead it is important to stay in contact with the decision makers. There are University of Oulu and OYY alumni in the parliament and in the City of Oulu organisation now and hopefully in the future too. It is especially important to keep an ongoing discussion with them, so the students’ point of view is taken into account. We want to see young and student friendly members of the parliament in the next term”, says Salminen.

Application period for the Board is still open until Sunday 27.11. The Board is elected in the Student Council meeting on Thursday 1.12. Read more here.
